My teacher took major points off on my last paper because i used the word themself which she told me to erase from my memory and replace with themselves. So today she read out loud a poem by Emily Dickinson in which Dickinson uses the word themself. So then my teacher had to justify her critique of themself by saying it worked in 1850 but it does not work in 2013. Then she went on to tell the class, dont write like Dickinson. I took major offense to that. Despite the fact that some of the language may be outdated or simply not used any more, I would prefer to even attempt to write like one of the best poets ever. To tell someone not to is obscene. To limit someone to using common english in order to get a passing grade is foolish. There should be no limit on creativity, or word choice in this case. If say, Mark Twain were in this class, he would certainly have an F and that is very sad.
