My team builds and maintains an inward-facing mobile app for a rather large healthcare provider that is aimed at helping physicians refer patients and connect with other statewide physicians. During a recent company town-hall meeting where my supervisor was demonstrating the new versions additional features to group of board physicians, a physician raised her hand and said that while she thought the apps features were all very helpful and all, but wondered why cant she install it as a shortcut to her desktop computer? My supervisor politely explained that the app was meant to work for smartphones and tablets and that similar features were available from various intranet sites/applications. However, the mobile app is the only application that combined them all into 1 location. She then nods and sits down, only to speak up 3 mins later asking why wont this install on my flip phone? It was explained that if the app wouldnt install, it was possible her flip phone did not run iOS or Android and might not be considered a smartphone and that she might look into replacing her device with her cell phone carrier. (How my supervisor kept a straight face...Ill never understand) These are board chairpersons and largely considered experts in their fields, yet a simple smartphone app was beyond the grasp of at least one of them. Icing on the cake: About a week later I log into our IT ticketing system to see a support request assigned to our team... App wont install on flip-phone Shes persistent
