My thanks to Nicolas Rossignol of domaine Rossignol-Trapet in Gevrey Chambertin for a very interesting visit. Excellent 2013 Chapelle Chambertin and Chambertin Grand Cru with crackling energy and tension. I had walked from Morey Saint Denis to Gevrey Chambertin along the high path next to the forest, so I could picture the vineyards of Combottes, Latricieres-Chambertin, Chambertin and Clos de Beze from their highest elevation. To my surprise I found several rows of vines covered in netting in Latricieres. I took a picture and showed it to Nicolas during the course of my visit. Oh yes, he said, those are my vines. I have permission from the INAO to do an experiment to see if the netting can prevent hail damage and we have started in Latricieres to measure the effect of the nets on the development of the vine. Next year we will have permission to expand the experiment and see if it is a viable solution. At an average of 10,000 vines per hectare, that looks like an interesting solution that has a lot of challenges for the vineyard teams, who are often stretched very thinly with tthe wet Summers being experienced in Burgundy over the last few years.
