My thought for the day: Its time we admitted that college - TopicsExpress

My thought for the day: Its time we admitted that college athletes, at least insofar as the major sports of football and basketball are concerned, are indeed employees primarily and students only tangentially, if at all. As employees of the University, they should be able to bargain for the wages theyre paid for playing ... forget about athletic scholarships, let the players be paid a salary they can bargain for. The fiction that players are students who have to meet the same academic regulations as other students is just that ... a fiction. There isnt one major university in the United States that hasnt rigged its academic rules so that football and basketball players need never worry about going on academic probation, as do other students. Probation, of course, would make the athletes ineligible to play in intercollegiate competition. (Caveat: Im only talking about football and basketball players, since theyre the ones who bring in large amounts of revenue to their universities and therfore deserve a bigger slice of the pie.)
