My thoughts: The social issues surrounding the HOW did this happen to Trayvon Martin starts in Pre-K. Check the stats in your neighborhood schools: Are black boys disproportionately referred, suspended, expelled, court-bound? What neighborhood programs (non-athletic based) are available for our kids to channel their free time and challenge their intellectual pursuits? How many hours a week are YOU spending not just with your own kids but the kids in your neighborhood with an invested interest? How often do you have a conversation with your immediate neighbor, that would allow them to have an invested interest in the safety of your child and vice verse? Do you know your principals and administrators on a first name basis? Can they email you? Can they call you? Are you a familiar face in the schools, to the degree that kids come up and hug you as a noted protector of their lives? Its not JUST the impending DOJ cases that will honor and protect our Young Children. Its not economic viability that will protect our Young Children. WE CAN create a community that protects our children--we can change the fabric of our local communities to create a blanket of investment and engagement over our children. So, sign the petitions. March if you like. But, get engaged...get active. It is times like this that I am happy I am not a politician. I am an ACTIVIST.
