My thoughts on prerelease: 1) I went 4-1-1 playing mardu. My deck was 17 lands (4 of each basic, 2 r/b life, 2 w/b life, 1 mardu three color), 6 removal spells, 1 mardu charm, which functioned as a seventh removal spell usually, 1 hordeling outburst, and 17 creatures, with two six drops being morphs, and one 5 drop, ankle shanker. Everything else was small, with a lot of raid. The raid mechanic was very strong. Of the raid cards, I had 2 of the discard a card, one make a 1/1, one make mardu mana, one bring back a 2 or less drop from the graveyard. I got a lot of utility off that. 2) the format, other than mardu, is slow and grindy. Azban in particular. The two non-wins I had were against azban. The one guy had three of the common morph azban that becomes a 4/4 lifelink. If the rounds were the usual forty minute rounds, instead of fifty, there would have been a lot more draws. Thank you Jon for making that change. 3) in three of my wins, the deciding factor in the last game was my opponent suffering mana screw. Having a solid mana base is key, and should be taken into account when mulliganing. Having the temur savageblade guy is nice, but not having the red to cast it is kind of a bummer. 4) no one played sultai today. So if anyone is feeling brave tomorrow, plenty of sultai available. There is no azban of mardu left if you didnt pre-register. There should be seven mardu players, and ten-ish azban players tomorrow.
