My thoughts on this weekend of reflection and thanks - We are so inundated with stories of the coming ice age, The hole in the Ozone layer, swine flu, bird flu, Radon, acid rain, melting ice caps, Chernobyl/Fukushima, Solar flares, Asteroids, Bee die offs, Fish die offs, GMOs, Earthquakes, Red Meat is bad, Eggs are bad, fat is bad, SIDS, Hurricanes, Paraquat, global warming/climate change, Fergusan, ebola, ISIS......... after awhile you say What ever, Im just going to live my life and I would appreciate if you would stop trying to scare me! That said, I wish we were more concerned about the economy, jobs, the debt, the education system, the EPA, the IRS, the NSA, the border, the voter turn out and a balanced budget. 2200 years ago the Romans faced a similar problem. They needed to distract the masses from the problems at hand. They coined this mechanism of influential power over the Roman mass. Panem et Circensus, translated literally bread and circuses. This was a formula for the well-being of the population, and thus a political strategy. This formula offered a variety of pleasures such as: the distribution of food, public baths, gladiators, exotic animals, chariot races, sports competition, and theater representation. It was an cost effective instrument in the hands of the Emperors to keep the population peaceful, and at the same time it gave the leadership the opportunity to voice themselves in these places of performance.
