My thoughts this morning following Lawrence - March in March is an example of our collective call for justice overriding an all-pervasive fear that is being inculcated into the masses via political slogans and media hype/sensationalism - Fear of terrorists (asylum seekers), fear of bikies and so on, serving to justify authoritarianism and the tightening of law and order (and the steady march of corporatocracy behind the scenes). The greater the need for social control, the greater the fear mongering. I find astonishing the lengths the power holders will go to generate and perpetuate fear. The anti-communist era, the Cold War, Thatcher and the Falklands, Bush and the post 9/11 rhetoric. Of course television/film/tabloid press/internet are all mediums for the blanket transmission of fear. We saw the same rise of justice over fear in the anti-Iraq war demonstrations in 2003. Fear unifies in a them-and-us fortress fashion. Justice unifies us around a principle - we may all have very different views on this and that but we rise above those differences as we pay homage to the principle of justice. I woke this morning thinking this was worth keeping in mind.
