My top five D&D supplements/scenarios of all time. Im including Old School Renaissance material, and there is an evident Lovecraftian /weird fiction bias in most of these: 1) Carcosa by Geoffrey McKinney and published by Lamentations of the Flame Princess. Mind-bogglingly weird, horrific and nihilistic Lovecraftian sandbox campaign, and one of the most beautiful rpg books I own. 2) Vornheim by Zak Smith, published by Lamentations of the Flame Princess. Cool weirdness were virtually every inch of every page has practical utility for running an urban campaign. 3) Module X2 Castle Amber by Tom Moldvay, published by TSR. Brilliant mini-campaign based on Clark Ashton Smiths Averoigne tales encompassed in only 32 pages. 4) Module I1 Dwellers of the Forbidden City by David Cook, published by TSR. A dungeon/wilderness mini-campaign set in a prehuman city in a foetid jungle, with hardly an Orc, dwarf or elf in sight - one of the first modules to recognise D&Ds pre-Tolkien, weird fiction/sword and sorcery roots in Howard, Smith and Lovecraft. Lots of nice Cthulhoid imagery in the maps/illustrations. Also notable for introducing later Lovecraftian/Howardian D&D antagonists: the aboleth and the yuan-it. 5) Deities and Demigods first edition by James Ward and Robert Kuntz, by TSR. Notable primarily for the chapter on the Cthulhu mythos (excised from later editions). Whilst I had discovered Lovecraft prior to reading this, there is just something about the wonderful Erol Otus illustrations that evokes a profound sense of nostalgia for my first encounters with the master of weird/cosmic horror. Joint fifth place with Deities and Demigods is Realms of the Crawling Chaos, a Lovecraftian supplement for Labyrinth Lord but fully compatible with basic/expert D&D by Daniel Proctor and Michael Curstis, and published by Goblinoid Games. A great sourcebook for creating campaigns in Lovecraftian-influenced sword and sorcery worlds.
