My tribute to Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) will continue next - TopicsExpress

My tribute to Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) will continue next Saturday at 10 a.m. Eastern on WBNI (94.1 or wbni.org - Classical button). Once again I will be playing recordings from the complete RCA Victor set with the Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini (1867-1957). There will be four works of Brahms on the program: Symphony No. 2 in D Major, recorded February 11, 1952, in Carnegie Hall; Variations on a Theme by Haydn, recorded February 4, 1952, in Carnegie Hall; Symphony No. 3 in F Major, recorded November 4, 1952, in Carnegie Hall; and Liebeslieder (Love Songs) Waltzes, Op. 52, from the NBC broadcast on Studio 8-H on November 13, 1948. The waltzes were a rare instance where Toscanini did NOT use the NBC Symphony Orchestra; instead he had pianists Artur Balsam and Joseph Kahn, along with a chorus prepared by Walter Preston (not Robert Shaw, who usually worked with Toscanini from 1945 to 1954). This NBC performance is from one of only ten concerts to be simulcast on radio and television; fortunately, the video was preserved on a kinescope and has been digitally restored. You can see it on Youtube.
