My two cents ahead of your oral presentations 1. make your claim first and use your presentation to demonstrate it. Do take a position on the issue, even if there are arguments for and against it. 2. use examples to back up your claim, and don’t be afraid to use personal experience as a source of examples, as long as it’s appropriate. 3. avoid unnecessary digressions: they will make you lose your way, and your listeners theirs. Stay on course. 4. outline the parts of your presentation at the start, using model phrases that serve to indicate sequences in a presentation, including enumerating the three or four parts of your argument. (Three tends to be enough.) I have a file of such ‘sequencing phrases’ that I am happy to email you, as long as it is shared equally (and thereby fairly) among all IMA groups. 5. speak calmly, enunciate clearly, and don’t speed up. 6. smile. All will be well !
