My typical day at work, A 98 year old will ask me all night When does the plane leave? When will we be back in the states? What do I pack? She will pack and ( we) unpack all day everyday. Another resident will walk all day although her feet hurt so bad. She only sits for a few moments then she is up again. Yet another resident spends her day being sweet. She loves to hold your hand, color, paint and sing nursery rhymes. Dementia is an awful disease. My nights are long and the work can be both physical and emotional exhausting. Why do I do it then? I do it because of the moments during my shift when they smile and laugh. I do it because they are still real people and they deserved to be treated in such a way. I do it because I want to help make their last days on earth joyful. If you have the opportunity to help with the elder, do it. You will be a blessing to them and you will be blessed too.
