My web searching has so far failed to turn up any studies of the Custer channel wing lift applied to airships. Channel wing engines could, at least theoretically, make controlled vertical take off and landing by an airship much more stable and controlled and remove almost all ground crew or mooring mast requirements. Throttling a channel wing, in effect, adds or discharges ballast, that is, the weight of air. A channel wing powered airship needs no expendable ballast and much less interior space for the ballonets which expel air as the lifting gas expands and control pitch.
