My wife and I moved to Manhattan, from our cute little suburban Philadelphia town (Media, PA) a little more than two years ago. I never loved Philly and I had lived for quite a number of years in NYC when I was younger, so it was an exciting move for me. Also, thanks to this move, I was able to get an interesting job where I can use some of the skills I picked up while I worked with the Navajo Nation, as well as some of the personal transformations that occurred exploring non-duality. But I lost a lot on account of this move. While I have work friends in NY, I no longer have personal friends. Im not a very social person, so this isnt a huge deal for me, but its a loss. I used to really enjoy walking in my old suburban neighborhood chatting with my neighborhood friends about this and that. That isnt the case living in Manhattan. The dog walks to the park are fairly somber affairs, carefully avoiding eye contact ... its a solitary world devoid of family or significant friendship contacts. I guess these are the sacrifices one makes in life. NY is an amazing place. It is the urban extravaganza. We no longer have a car. Our carbon footprint seems to be relatively minimal. But I also feel a bit like a prisoner in a rather cold, impersonal world. Oh well .. just Tuesday morning musings.
