My year as I see it. Hi everyone it has been an interesting year. As I look back over the past 12 months or so, I see I have learnt many things as I do any other year. I have met many new faces as I do any other year I think I have also made some new friends and business associates as well business connections that will help me achieve my future goals. I would like to think I have been able to help others in some way to achieve some steps towards their goals as well. As many of you know I have been working toward setting up business in manufacturing food in the form of Yeast based Crumpets to the style of the Geelong iconic BCW. For those that dont now the history the BCW Crumpets were established back in the 1950s. Then some time down the years the company was bought by Goodman Fielder. then in 2008 they ceased production . They were using quite a few tonnes of flour a week and when you look at being able to manufacture 6,000 packets of crumpets from a Tonne of flour, thats a lot of crumpets. I started experimenting with making crumpets with the same recipe in 2010 and over a period of time was able to make a very similar product. In some ways I believe it could have a better texture and flavour even. I started making them in a small way at the back of the fruit and veg shop in Watson’s road in a small commercial kitchen I established for the purpose and they become very popular with the people who missed the BCW style of crumpets and they also found a lot of new followers. When I sold the Fruit and veg business I had to stop making the crumpets because of the cost of establishing a new commercial kitchen was more money than I had available. So since January 2013 since walking away from the fruit and Veg I have been working on new adventures working towards the end goal of establishing the crumpet business again. It has been an interesting journey when I look back on it, although when I was going through it, I was not over excited by how I was coping, it was very frustrating in many ways. What I thought was stress related problems causing all my health concerns with my stomach I found was actually a Gastric bug that had been living in side of me for years and since that has been removed every thing is great. Now every thing is coming together nicely. I have also been offered the finance to make things happen so its full forward. I have set up the mobile coffee van and I have learned many things as well as how to make a good cup of coffee. I have also set up a small cafe at the Geelong Show ground Sunday market . This gives me the opportunity to learn more about the cafe industry without the large out lay and a place to market my products. I bought a food caravan which I am now setting up to use as a mobile commercial kitchen which will give me the opportunity to get back to making the original Crumpets and pancakes. With the food van I can take it to events and shows and sell hot crumpet pizzas and pancakes made sweet and savoury and all the toppings which will show them how they can be eaten and how good they are. While experimenting with the crumpets I made some variations. Now I can make Wholemeal style and Cinnamon flavoured, square and large round 100cm and 200cm pizza based types even heart shaped ones for valentines day, I also established a good recipe for pancakes while working on these and Kiss biscuits, Anzacs, Whoopie cakes and others. Now something new has come forward in the past few months I have been working on some new flavours and styles of Rocky road which I believe could becoming very popular. Flavours like Banana, Mint, Strawberry, Rose, Orange, Vanilla and others, I have been able to offer it around to many people and the response has been great. I see there is lots of fun coming up in the next 12 Months and I am looking forward to it.
