MyThoughts on BLUE JASMINE (2013) Finally watched BLUE JASMINE and found myself really, really loving it. It is an excellent film from Woody Allen, with a mesmerizing and brilliant performance from Cate Blanchett, playing an emotionally unstable Jasmine, a rich New York socialite who goes broke after her wealthy husband (Alec Baldwin) was sent to prison for fraud. Needs a place to stay, Jasmine visits her sister (Sally Hawkins) in San Francisco for shelter. But to start a brand new life and pass through her life crisis is not easy for Jasmine, as she has to accept her current conditions, deal with the past and make peace with herself. This is a very enjoyable drama-comedy, one of Woody Allens best, with a great original screenplay written by Allen, filled with smart dialogues, telling a wonderful story and a great character study of a fallen socialite, sometimes bitter and sad, but at the same time also funny and refreshing, due to the performance of Blanchett, who basically owned the movie. The back and forth storytelling was told smoothly and seamless, explaining things as the story goes. Blanchett captured us with her powerful and memorable characterization of Jasmine. She was elegant and played Jasmine elegantly, a character so accustomed living a good and rich life, that she forgets, or choose to forget and live in denial, that she has actually gone poor. Blanchetts intelligent portrayal of Jasmines anxiety and panic disorders, that brings her to nervous breakdown, constantly consuming Xanax and frequently talking to herself, while still maintaining her elegant posture of a respectable socialite, sometimes bragging about her past to strangers, but at the same time hiding her true past from people who try to get close to her, again proves what a great and intelligent actress Blanchett is. And for a performance this good, she should (and my favorite pick to) win the Oscar this year (absolutely no doubt better than Amy Adams in American Hustle and Sandra Bullock in Gravity, the other two conterders for Best Actress that Ive watched so far). The supporting cast was also a pleasant line-up. Sally Hawkins gave a good performance as the sister, Ginger (nominated for Best Supporting Actress). Andrew Dice Clay was also very good as Gingers ex husband. The other actors were Peter Sarsgaard, Bobby Cannavale and Louis C.K. BLUE JASMINE was a wonderful movie. A must-see bitter and sweet. I will put this as one of my most favorite movies of 2013. (MJ) MyRating: 4.5/5 stars MyScore: A (9/10) MyRT Take: (Absolutely) FRESH
