Myanmars core problem since independence from British rule has been on ethnic issues fueled by historical rivalry ans mistrust; particularly against the majority Bamars (consisting 60% of the population). How Buddhism has come to viewed as narrow minded chauvinistic Buddhist Nationalism is a mystery to me. Unlike other religions, mainly Abrahamic religions, Buddhism is NOT a political religion. Democracy is a term coined from two Greek words; demos meaning people and kratic meaning power; power of the people. In such a system every person in the community takes part in discussing and deciding on the affairs of the state. Representative government, especially by multi-party system as is practiced in the west and many nations, has proven to be an extremely dangerous approximation in that it divides the people of a nation; example Thailand, Bangladesh, India, etc. Each nation has its own peculiarities - history, ethnicity, culture, etc. and the type of governance (constitution) has to be adapted to deal with that nations peculiarities. Proportionate Representation (PR) goes some ways to address the representation of the ethnic minorities in the parliament. The argument dished out by Dr. Nyo Tun against PR is totally hubris; they betray a sick mind.
