Myra Mae (Mrs. Rod) Weier, age 69, of Watertown, SD, recently lost her struggle with Alzheimer’s disease on Sunday, October 5, 2014. Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 13, 2014, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Watertown. The celebrant will be Father Michael Wensing. Music will be provided by Jane Jaspers as organist with Becky Lubbers as soloist. The family is requested to meet at the church on Monday by 10:30 a.m. to attend the service. An open house-visitation will be at Myra’s home at 1205 Sunset St. NW, Watertown, SD, on Sunday, October 12th from 3 to 7 p.m. and prior to services at the church on Monday. Burial will be held at a later date at St. Boniface Catholic Church Cemetery in rural Viborg, SD. Urn bearer will be Myra’s brother Roger Bettmann. Memorials may be directed to the Lake Area Foundation Scholarship Program in memory of Myra. Myra was born on February 12, 1945, in rural Warner, SD, to Theodore and Irene (Grote) Bettmann. She grew up on the family farm and attended elementary school at St. John’s Elementary School in rural Warner. Myra attended Aberdeen Central High School in Aberdeen, SD, and college at Northern State University in Aberdeen. At NSU, she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. While attending college, she worked at the Village Bowl and the Delicatessen at Kessler’s Food Store, both in Aberdeen. Upon graduating, she worked half a year in the Selby, SD, School System teaching second grade. In 1969, Myra married Rod Weier of Webster, SD. She taught second grade in the Webster School System until 1984. In 1984, the couple moved to Watertown where Myra served as a remedial reading/math teacher in the Watertown School System until 2000, when she retired from teaching after 31 years in elementary education. Myra loved the outdoors and outdoor activities. She golfed and liked to care for flowers, her lawn and garden. She waterskied and snow skied, and loved to go boating and snowmobiling. She was an excellent dance partner and loved to dance. She and Rod attended numerous dances and polka fests in and around South Dakota and can still be seen dancing at a polka fest at Lake Benton, MN, on Minnesota Public TV. She was a great carpenter helper to Rod, as they built a number of homes as do-it-your-selfers in Webster and Watertown. She loved to travel especially to see her son and his family in Vancouver, WA. Myra was a wonderful mother and wife, and will be missed dearly by her family and friends. Myra is survived by her husband, Rod; two sons: Jason Weier of Sioux Falls, SD, and Justin (Nancy) Weier of Boise, ID; one daughter, Jennifer (Jim) Giessinger, of Watertown; two grandchildren: Sofia and Owen Weier; four brothers: Gary (Holly) Bettmann of Fargo, ND, Roger (Marcia) Bettmann of Elkhorn, NE, Kevin (Janae) Bettmann of Blaine, MN, and David (Robin) Bettmann of Cedar Rapids, IA; three sisters: Marilyn (Larry) Baack of Columbus, IN, Mary (Keith) Arnholdt of Columbus, and Marge (Steve) Streitz of Flint, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Marla Jean Bettmann; one brother-in-law, Dennis Weier; and her parents-in-law, Francis and Carrie Weier. Online condolences may be given at--
