Myself along with our 2water guys Steve Knockwood and Brett Googoo will attend a clean water imitative in Membertouu on August 8 APC – Clean Water Initiative 2013 Kluskap C&D Boardroom Membertou Trade and Convention Centre 50 Maillard Street Membertou, NS Thursday, August 8, 2013 9:30 am – 3:30 pm What is the Clean Water Initiative? The Clean Water Initiative is a collaborative project between Dalhousie University’s Centre for Water Resources Studies (CWRS) and the Atlantic Policy Congress of First Nations Chiefs (APCFNC). Several research projects conducted over the past few years have focused on increasing the knowledge of water and wastewater systems in First Nation communities in Atlantic Canada. The goal for the APC Clean Water Initiative is to provide safe drinking water to communities through an independent innovative model, led by First Nations, which will have widespread public benefit. What is the regional First Nations Water Authority? Through years of research and collaboration with industry experts, CWRS and APCFNC have proposed an innovative method to attain safe drinking water and wastewater disposal in First Nation communities in Atlantic Canada, through the development of a regional First Nations Water Authority. The Authority would be a publicly owned corporation under the direction of a Board of Directors with all participating First Nation communities acting as the shareholders. It is a means of placing the responsibility and liability of providing safe water services on the Authority, and off of Chief and Council. Why regional visits? The regional visits have been organized to allow CWRS and the APCFNC to explain some of the options for the Authority in greater depth to community leaders. Regional visits will allow greater time for discussion about the concepts proposed, and provide Chief and Council the opportunity to provide feedback. What will happen during the regional visits? The regional community visits are structured as a one day workshop, during which the CWRS and the APCFNC will present the details of the Water Authority and its implications for Chief and Council. After this presentation, there will be time set aside for questions, comments and feedback from those present.
