Myself and two fellow Marines met for a 40-year reunion at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego back in 2009, where we were invited to attend a breakfast with the Marine Corps Historical Society the next day. We immediately accepted, and were there the next morning bright and early. After breakfast, we were approached by an older Marine who had been at the breakfast, and who had been introduced as a veteran of the Battle of Iwo Jima. He asked us if we minded him joining us on our tour of the new Marine Corps museum. Mind?? Speaking around the sudden large lumps in our throats, the three of us assured him that it would be a distinct honor and privilege to have him accompany us on the tour. And was it ever! We got to know him a bit, and he told us some great stories about his combat days, and about his years as a drill instructor. No doubt well into his eighties, he still stood ramrod straight, and still had a glint in his eye. It was an experience none of us will ever forget.
