NAMIBIA LEGENDS IN ACTION AGAINST CLEMS PIRATES FROM THE UK The Namibia Rugby Union is hosting two exciting matches on Saturday, 10 May and Wednesday, 14 May at the Hage Geingob Rugby Stadium, which will be two very unique matches. The matches will be played between a Namibia Legends team and a touring team from the UK, called Clems Pirates. Clems Pirates are known in the North East for their sheer enthusiasm, terrific tours and their fundraising efforts. It was started by brothers Andrew and Stephen Oxenham as a single match to celebrate Stephen’s 40th birthday. It is now a fine example of veterans’ rugby and was affiliated in 2000 to Durham RFU. With the help of their generous sponsor Thompsons of Prudhoe over 150 players have represented the club at home and abroad. The first tour was to Edinburgh and since then they have played around the globe including: South Africa, Germany, Argentina, Uruguay, Holland, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Nice, Cuba, Spain, Kuala Lumpur & Singapore and most recently Palma, Majorca. The Pirates will be on Tour to Namibia in May 2014. Whilst on tour they don’t just play Rugby but present local schools with kit and other goodies. Back home Clem’s Pirates have donated a total of almost £60,000 to good causes, including Charities such as, Cystic Fibrosis, St Cuthbert’s Hospice, the North East Air Ambulance, Help for Heroes, Tabitha’s Toys, CRUK. The NRU will choose a school who will benefit from the generous handouts of kit, mouthguards, etc from Clems Pirates. The school will be chosen on Saturday at the match, and the handover will be done next week Wednesday. The school that will be chosen will be selected on Saturday by indication of who has the most spectators from that particular school attending the match. Schools must therefor invite pupils and parents to attend the match on Saturday, and at the entrance the spectators will be asked to write the name of the school who invited them. The school with the most spectators invited will win. The Namibian Legends team consists mainly of players who played for Namibia in previous years, and a large group of the team who played in the very first RWC that Namibia qualified for in 1999 will be in action. The rest of the team is made up of players who played for Namibia after that period and therefor are called Legends. The concept of the Legends team is to involve those players who have done duty for Namibia after their retirement. This tie in with our grassroots program, Get Into Rugby, where the motto is Try, Play, Stay. Players first try the game, then they play the game, and the last phase is to stay in the game as spectator, administrator, coach, referee, match official, etc. The Namibian Legends team is: 1. Eben smith 2. Cor van Tonder 3. JM Meyer 4. Heino Senekal 5. Hardus Swart 6. Schalk van der Merwe 7. Herman Lintvelt 8. Sybrand de Beer 9. Ronaldo Pedro 10. Rudi van Vuuren 11. Deon Mouton 12.
