NANA ADDO STANDS BY MEDIA 1/12/14 Nana Akufo-Addohas counseled the media to continue to inform the citizenry regardless of the hostile environment they find themselves in. He offered the words of encouragement to journalists during a soiree he organized for them at his Nima residence where he was supported by Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Kofi Osei Ameyaw, Stephen Asamoah Boateng and Francis Addai Nimoh, contestants in the recent New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race. Nana Addo took his audience down memory lane recalling how he, upon the instructions of then President John Agyekum Kufuor, filed a nolle prosequi process to decriminalize the criminal libel from the country’s statute books. He said in spite of the progress made so far journalists could still hear knocks on their doors over stories they have written as they are invited by security agents to come and explain what they have put out. The 2016 flagbearer of the NPP, who associated himself with the media having been a publisher before, charged government to put out the correct stories whenever they feel what the media have put out do not represent the truth. He said “they should put out the facts and not subject journalists to interrogation. His remarks are traceable to the recent invitation of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Citifm over the reportage by the station of the arrest of Ruby Adu Gyamfi at Heathrow Airport. The media, he went on, should not be invited to come and explain circumstances surrounding stories they put out in the manner it happened recently, adding “it is sad that the President should define the role of the BNI under the circumstances. The hostile environment for the media notwithstanding, Nana said, “I am hopeful that this won’t dampen your spirit to put out what Ghanaians need to know so they can make informed decisions in the 2016 polls.” He charged the media to commit themselves to the development of the country. The NPP flagbearer for the 2016 elections advised government to recognize that Ghana can only develop when institutions of state are made to work efficiently. “That is the only way that we can make progress,” he said. Nana Akomea, Communications Director of the NPP, who was the MC for the occasion, gave life to the activity with his lively and humorous expressions before Nana’s brief but incisive remarks. There was hardly a guest who did not shake hands with the host Nana Akufo Addo who went round to fraternize with them. Last Thursday evening’s programme was preceded by a meeting by the flagbearer with former District Chief Executives
