NAR approves realtor changes to stay competitive CHICAGO – July 25, 2013 – A decision to expand the National Association of Realtors® (NAR)-owned realtor to allow listings by non-Realtors is a pivotal moment in the website’s history, but it also reflects a change in the way consumers shop for homes. For a number of years, realtor ranked as the No. 1 real estate website used by consumers. However, that changed in 2010 when competitors Zillow and Trulia moved into the top spots. “Realtors want realtor to have the resources and flexibility it needs to give consumers what they want while ensuring that today’s buyers and sellers can continue to rely on Realtors for the most accurate, credible market data,” says NAR President Gary Thomas. “We think the proposed changes achieve both goals.” The operating agreement is between NAR subsidiary Realtors Information Network (RIN) and Move Inc.’s subsidiary RealSelect, Inc. However, the RIN board wanted advice from NAR’s board of directors because realtor changes could have a substantial impact on Realtors. The change gives realtor more flexibility to use non-Realtor listings, including new homes and rental properties. Proponents of the change say it’s needed to keep realtor competitive. Opponents say the move waters down the Realtor brand. “When today’s consumer is searching for their dream home, they are utilizing more tools and information than ever before,” says realtor President Errol Samuelson, chief strategy officer for Move, Inc. “Today’s historic and collaborative recommendation from the NAR board members empowers us to further expand and enrich the consumer experience on realtor and its mobile applications.” Move Inc. is hosting their Q2 earnings call on Aug. 1 at 2 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time and will discuss the outcomes of the NAR meeting in more detail. A live webcast of the call will be available at investor.move under the Events & Presentations menu. © 2013 Florida Realtors®
