NASA Getting Involved In Increasing Number Of Partisan Battles. The Houston Chronicle (10/27, Powell) reported on the “deepening partisan disagreements” in Congress over NASA’s course. Sen. Bill Nelson said this is a “sad” development because of how non-partisan the agency has been in the past. According to the article, some believe NASA and all government agencies have to be cut, a “threatened upheaval” to the agency as commercial companies take over more launch duties to the ISS. The article details how this division has led to disagreements and even legislation barring NASA from developing its asteroid redirect mission. The “partisan political warfare” was also evident during the shutdown and Sen. David Vitter’s block of Elizabeth Robinson’s Energy Department nomination over an accusation she was “stalling a job-creating project.” Bob Mitchell, president of the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership, said “cooler heads” likely will decide on the proper next course for NASA, but only if they are willing to compromise.
