NASA Spaceward Bound Day 2: Today, we began the main focus of our study, analyzing lichen population distribution and growth tendencies on Blue Dragon Basalts. Using devices like this X-ray Fluorescence unit, we recorded elemental distributions of the rock itself. Lichens and mosses were analyzed in spatter cones and across the Pahoehoe & Aa lava flows. We expect a published result and are developing a testing protocol for lichens to be administered throughout the Northwest, specifically Idaho basalts. As you can see, the rock has curious color patterns which are a function of its unique chemistry. We are specifically interested in the distribution of Iron and Titanium within the rock (and the oxacylic acid effect by lichens). All of this correlates to possible life tendencies on other planets, such as Mars, and will be published upon completion. Real-life science in action, folks!
