NASARAWA DEP GOVERNOR DEFECTS FROM APC TO PDP Category: NewsPublished on Tuesday, 04 March 2014 05:00Written by Hir Joseph, LafiaHits: 1352Nasarawa State Deputy Governor Dameshi Barau Luka yesterday officially declared his defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and will today formally join the party. He will join the opposition party in the state at the state secretariat of the PDP in Lafia by 10am, according to Danjuma Joseph, his media aide.Consequent upon the formal declaration for the PDP, Luka officially wrote the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, informing his old party of his decision. In the two-paragraph letter dated March 2, the deputy governor said his decision was with immediate effect. The media aide said his boss would officially declare his defection to the PDP today. The state PDP confirmed the defection, saying his official declaration for the party had been long overdue.State party spokesman, John Mark Neto, who spoke to Daily Trust on phone, said: “We were supposed to have received him before now. I am surprised he did not send his letter to the APC until today”. He said the PDP in the state had convened a meeting to formerly receive Luka today. But retired General Abdullahi Aboki, the interim National Vice Chairman of the APC who also hails from the state, told Daily Trust that he would have expected Luka to also resign from office since he found it necessary to leave the party on which platform he entered office. “I am yet to be informed of this development, but all I can say is that the deputy governor has the right to jump into office. If that is his choice, I wish him well in that party. But I do know that he registered with the APC. He participated in all APC activities, including making nominations to various offices. But his leaving the APC will have no implication on the party and the government he is serving”, General Aboki said. The state government in its reaction declared that the decision normal, saying it has is no implication on governance. State information commissioner, Hamza Elayo said: “He is still Nasarawa deputy governor. It was a joint ticket and his office is constitutional. This is not the first time we will be having this experience in this country. Former President Obasanjo lost his deputy to an opposition party in 2006. In Adamawa today, the deputy is in a party other his principal’s, same experience in Sokoto. So there is no implication on governance. Signs of the deputy governor’s planned defection to the PDP were not noticed earlier in 2013”. Governor Al-Makura presided over the appointment of an interim management committee of the APC in October of 2013 with Stanley Buba, the deputy’s kinsman and long-time political rival emerging as interim chairman. Luka was away in the United States and returned to kick against the appointment of his kinsman whom he said does not belong to any of the legacy parties. He said he was never consulted on the appointment of his Mada kinsman from Akwanga.
