NASHUA TELEGRAPH - June 2, 2014 Nashua Soup Kitchen breaks ground on new home as donations pile up News that an anonymous $100,000 donation will come their way as soon as they hit the $2.6 million fundraising plateau was celebrated by officials and volunteers of the Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter at a small groundbreaking ceremony at its new Quincy Street home on Wednesday. With renovations of the former Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 483 headquarters well underway, Soup Kitchen leaders are setting their sights on a September occupancy. Mayor Donnalee Lozeau and Board of Aldermen President David Deane joined representatives of U.S. Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Kelly Ayotte and U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster on the speaking program. Soup Kitchen board member John Fisher was master of ceremonies. The building, which the Soup Kitchen acquired last year after outgrowing its current space on Chestnut Street, is three times larger and will house the soup kitchen, a food pantry, administrative offices and meeting space. Executive Director Lisa Christie said the fact the services will be under one roof will allow the agency to better serve its clients in ways that preserve their dignity. In a twist to a traditional groundbreaking, Christie and Building Committee Chairman Dan Enxing “broke ground” using giant spoons rather than shovels. Christie said fundraising continues. “We are getting close, and know the community is working with us to get to that goal,” she said.
