NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) - Four people who decided not to make any calls after an infants tongue was cut with a sharp object were found not guilty of child abuse and neglect charges on Thursday. One person was charged with hurting the child, but the other four charged did not insist the child go to the hospital. They did not call police to report the injury. One of the women charged, Sheila Barnett, was at the home at the time borrowing the kitchen. She didnt know the child, but only mentioned that tongue cuts rarely require stitches. The state said Jordan Love used a sharp object to cut the childs tongue. The babys father said there wasnt much blood and his son wasnt crying, so he didnt report the injury. Three other people at the house, including Barnett, didnt make any calls. They said they didnt know what happened and it was up to the babys father what to do. Barnett, a working single mother of two, faced 15 to 25 years in jail. Love was found guilty, but the four other charged were all found not guilty. Barnett and her lawyer, Sam Wooden, broke into tears when the verdict was read. Her three-year ordeal was over. The prosecution would not comment on this case. Love faces up to 50 years in prison.
