The program is inspired by studies suggesting that the power of art extends to children with autism as well as their families, and that art provides opportunities to communicate in different modalities. Led by Art Educator trained in Art therapy Jennifer Oppito Candiano through a new collaboration with the Art Access department of the Queens Museum of Art, this program employs a multimedia approach, using art to enhance experiences and learning and is designed to be a fun, interactive social experience that promotes independence in students as they go about the process of making and exploring works of art. A portion of each class is devoted to visiting the museum’s galleries and viewing works of art, that become a springboard for communication, promoting discussion in art, expression of ideas and inspiration for the workshop activities.
