NASSIT Pensioners Complain of Payment Delay By Melvin Tejan Mansaray It is been widely reported that some NASSIT contributors have faced serious difficulties in accessing their pension payments from the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT). NASSIT pensioner’s range from government retirees, contributor (15 years contributors’ to scheme - age 50 to 55) and survivor’s pension paid to beneficiaries of a deceased contributor, invalidity pension – in case of physical or psychological impairment (blindness, paralyses). Osman Foday Koroma Senior Manager, Public Affairs NASSIT explained that due to shortcomings in the submission of application by some applicant’s documentary processes and procedures that is why delays have been experienced by some clients benefits. ‘ For someone to duly get their benefits a retirement letter, two recent passport pictures, a completed and submitted NASSIT application form – SS5A and a social security card. For survivors claimants must submit death certificate, an employer’s letter of attestation, birth certificates of dependants (spouse and children) in tandem with the wish of the contributor, school verification by heads must also be presented should there be a need. We made the process rigorous because we are trying as best to minimize if not eradicate fraud in the payment of benefits to our over seven thousand pensioners (retirement, invalidity and survivors) which they say is an attractive package. Some employers have not being paying contributions for their employees and there is gap in payment this will cause delay’, Osman Foday Koroma noted. Meanwhile NASSIT reflected major success stories – ‘in 20 13 our membership increased thus a corresponding increase in number of contributions from contributors. We continue paying pensions to two categories of people; payment of government pensioners paid by the Accountant’s General’s department and Meanwhile, NASSIT say it will focus on making profitable investments2014 (ultra modern plaza at Makeni, Mammy Yoko Radisson blue hotel, to commission ultramodern plaza in Bo) so as to make the country a better place. Nonetheless, NASSIT is implicated by the Auditor’s General Report and embroiled in a ludicrous pay alarm, fraud cheque, and bad media publicity but it Publicity wing says NASSIT is run by human beings therefore problems and constrains are insurmountable but they are poise to address them one by one. ‘Anytime an institution or a person points out our weaknesses we see that we correct it. We are prone to mistakes but we will correct and try to better ourselves everyday for posterity to judge us ’, he noted.
