NAT WAS RUSHED TO THE NEAREST VETERINARY HOSPITAL 200KS FROM US AS SHE COULDN’T WALK. NAT’S HORRIBLE ABSCESS WHICH HAS RE-APPEARED FOR THE THIRD TIME AND HAS JUST BEEN LANCED BY OUR VET LEAVING TWO OPEN CUTS IN HER SIDE STARTED TO LOOK INFECTED. She was in such pain that she bit me again as I was trying to pull her out of her hiding place. She couldn’t walk more than a few steps before collapsing and we didn’t know if the infection was the cause. We arrived at the hospital and lifted Nat into a mobile cage and took our turn to see the vet whilst blood was oozing from her abscess. Eventually we were called and Nat was lifted onto the examination table which she found very painful . The vet poked and prodded at her abscess and examined it closely before allaying our fears about infection. He syringed a large amount of saline solution which happily didn’t wash out any pus or infected blood. However he did find another large lump on the opposite side and Nat flinched in pain as the ex-ray taken later showed to be infected. He did question whether it was her own blood that had caused these infections as she had no wounds or puncture holes. He then tested her reflexes along her spine and back legs which were normal so he took a blood sample and the results were horrifying. Her red and white blood cells were normal but her blood platelets had dropped from 200,000 which is the lowest of the normal range to 3.000. With a reading that low the vet said it was extremely lucky Nat hadn’t had a hemorrhage he also felt sure she’d had blood parasites for quite a long time. What is remarkable is that Nat is fat, is eating well and loves to run on the beach which isn’t the condition of a sick dog. Maybe her low blood platelets had caused an internal hemorrhage and that’s the reason her large swelling was full of black congealed blood. The vet could say exactly. Nat has been on her medication for a few days and is already showing signs of being able to stand although she’s very wobbly. The vet said she’s in a very serious condition but will recover slowly and hopefully will eventually walk just like she used to.
