NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (NANS) UNDER THE ABLE LEADERSHIP OF ITS PRESIDENT (ELECT) SIR ALI WALI TASK JIGAWA STATE GOVERNOR, DR. SULE LAMIDO ON STUDENTS UNIONISM” The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has tasked Jigawa state Governor Sule Lamido to stop making moves that will create division among Nigerian students. President of NANS Comrade Ali Wali made this call in a statement Friday. He said it is untoward for the Jigawa governor who is an activist to hobnob with non-students parading themselves as students union leaders. It is unfortunate that some politicians have been desperate in using the students union body to advance their personal political agenda that has no bearing on the Nigerian students, Comrade Wali said. He said Nigerian students have always been united but the only time you see crisis in the association is when genuine students are fighting fake students who are being propped up by some politicians for their selfish motives. Comrade Wali alerted the public that some non-students in their early 50s are currently going round some states for fraudulent political endorsements ahead of 2015 elections. There are reports that some group of non-students under one 45-year-old Tijjani Usman is going round meeting governors for one favour or the other in the name of NANS. The public should know that these people are non-students therefore they should beware, he said. He said his administration is currently engaging the NANS Senate to develop a mechanism where only genuine students are elected into NANS. We are also trying to ensure the total democratization of students’ unionism in all tertiary institutions across the country. He frowned at the manner politicians used students to advance their selfish interests. Nigerian students shouldn’t be isolated. We have to be part and parcel of the development process. This we can only achieve when our students have improved capacity, relevant skills and determination but not through divide and rule. We have to salvage the precarious situation where students and youths are relegated to the background. We have to change the trend where students are used by politicians also, he said.
