NATIONAL CONFERENCE: THE ISSUES The SSG has finally put a tag to the confab: NATIONAL CONFERENCE; but what are the issues to be discussed? The position of #FOFPEN on this matter is a very simple one: WE NEED A SOVEREIGN NATIONAL CONFERENCE; to discuss how our collective enterprise can remain one strong and united entity that will continue to give everyone a sense of belonging. We understand why our leaders are SCARED of “SOVEREIGN-” for fear that their powers will be taken away or subjugated. But this fear is unfounded. However, we are glad that the SSG pointed out that a NO-GO-AREA is the issue of Nigeria’s unity, that the divisibility/dissolution of the federation will not be discussed nor tolerated during the confabulation. We are not against the nation dividing, PEACEFULLY, we must add, if that is what the people want, but we will never be in support of a violent breakaway of parts of the nation. But let’s ask very germane questions: 1. Who will benefit from a fragmented/disunited Nigeria? 2. What kind of people would want to see Nigeria dissolved? With these questions in mind let us proceed to ask another: Will a fragmented Nigeria be stronger than ONE NIGERIA? Looking at the larger picture we want to believe that a united Nigeria is a more viable enterprise that should constantly be worked on in order to keep her afloat. The nation must guard the interest of every citizen and must work hard toward giving the people good quality healthcare, shelter, water and electricity; basic amenities that would make life worth living. WE MUST NOT ALLOW ETHNIC/TRIBAL/RELIGIOUS SENTIMENTS WITHIN THE POLITY THAT IS ALREADY BEING HEATED UP BY PARTISAN BICKERING AND RUMOUR PEDDLING DERAIL US FROM THE PATH OF LAYING A GOOD FOUNDATION FOR OUR CHILDREN’S CHILDREN; THOSE ONES WHO WOULD BE PROUD THAT WE WERE HERE AND WOULD BE HAPPY TO BEAR OUR NAMES. THE CONSTANT DEFECTIONS AND RE-ALIGNMENT OF ALLEGIANCES SHOULD HELP IMPROVE OUR NASCENT DEMOCRACY AND NOT DESTROY IT. We want to commend all who have worked on the NATIONAL CONFERENCE up until now and hope this confab will not go the way of other similar ventures that were put together in the past so that the names of the participants will be written in our hearts in gold letters as great men that walked the earth and history will never forget them.
