NATIONAL DIVERSITY AWARDS - VOTE FLAG (Flooding on the Levels Action Group) - Voting ends 18th July 2014 In early 2014 the Somerset Levels were subjected to the heaviest rainfall it had received in over 20+ years; an area of approximately 65sqm was flooded. The floodwater remained on the Somerset Levels for 3 months, and was over 10 feet high in places. Hundreds of homes and businesses were lost due to the floods. Tim Holmes, the main co-ordinator for Burrowbridge, along with Stuart Smith who co-ordinated for Moorland, both volunteered under the banner of FLAG (Flooding on the Levels Action Group). They sought volunteers to help with multiple tasks such as sandbagging, wood chipping footpaths, delivering aid, and saving homes (personal belongings) and people etc. across many of the villages. Volunteers came from all over the country to help the villages of the Somerset Levels and to support FLAG. At the height of the flooding, FLAG had over 10,000+ members with people donating food, clothing, cleaning materials from all over the country. Companies donated cleaning materials, tons of food, pontoons, waders, wellies, shovels, wheel barrows etc. FLAG and the coordinators did an amazing job to rally the community across the country to support the Somerset Levels during the flooding period. If you were a volunteer for FLAG, donated goods, or donated money through all its ongoing fundraising and projects, or just believed in their cause which is to campaign for better water management on the Somerset Levels, please spare a few minutes and select the link below and vote for FLAG. Please share this message and this link! Thank you. https://nominate.nationaldiversityawards.co.uk/Nominate/Endorse/15707?name=FLAG
