NATIONAL PREMIER LEAGUE PREVIEW, ROUND ONE The much-vaunted - TopicsExpress

NATIONAL PREMIER LEAGUE PREVIEW, ROUND ONE The much-vaunted National Premier Leagues kicks off this weekend with games across the metropolitan area. Armadale could not have asked for a more difficult first-up opponent than current State champions Bayswater City at Frank Drago Reserve. “If we get beat by less than three goals we’ll have done better than most other teams,” joked coach Lee Bamber. “We’re looking forward to the challenge and go into the game with a plan that will hopefully start our season off on a positive note. We have worked really hard on our fitness over the pre-season and we will be more competitive (than last season).” It may be round one but the importance of a Stirling Lions win over top flight newcomers Subiaco AFC is not lost on coach Gary Williams. “Subiaco will be out to prove a point to the football community, so we will need to be at the top of our game to achieve the objective of getting the three points,” said the Stirling coach, who team travels to the WA Athletics Stadium. “They are also at home, which will give them a distinct advantage. However, if we want to be challenging this year these are the types of games we need to get points from.” Taki Nicolaidis takes a new-look Perth SC outfit to Intiga Stadium to play Perth Glory, who are back on the local stage for the first time in a decade. “The game on Saturday against Perth Glory will be a very tough task for us,” Nicolaidis said. “They have just finished a full season (in the National Youth League) and will be very fit and well-organized. There is a lot of talent in their squad and we will need to be at our best to beat them.” Also on Saturday is ECU Joondalup verses Cockburn City, and a twilight encounter between Floreat Athena and Inglewood United at Litis Stadium (7.00pm). The round concludes on Sunday when Sorrento welcome Balcatta to Percy Doyle Reserve. “It’s going to be a good first-up test,” said joint Sorrento coach Jamie Harnwell. “We drew with Balcatta in the Night Series but we have fine-tuned how we are going to play against them and are looking to starting with a win. The players have responded well to what Trevor (Morgan) and I are trying to implement and, as always, there is a great crack and team spirit.” All games – Saturday and Sunday – kick-off at 3.0pm unless stated otherwise. footballwa.net
