Deadline for application: 27 January 2015 OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME: Objectives of the Programme and of the immediate unit or field activity: The Global Arabic Programme is responsible for translation, editing and revising official documents and other health- relatedinformation into and form Arabic. Purpose of the Post: To provide support in Arabic translation of WHO publications and documents into English/Arabic. Organizational Context: Under the overall guidance of the Coordinator, Knowledge, Languages and Publishing, the incumbent will contribute, as a team member, in providing high quality translated/edited official and other health-related documents and materials. The incumbent will collaborate and coordinate with other staff members inside the Regional Office to improve the output of his or her functions. Styles and standards of WHO must be adhered to strictly. Description of duties: Summary of Assigned Duties: - Translate from English into Arabic, and sometimes vice versa, as well as revise, edit and proofread correspondence, speeches, web content, documents of governing bodies and other technical and nontechnical materials of varying degrees of complexity, ensuring accuracy, clarity and uniformity of terminology and in accordance with WHO style; - Perform précis-writing and summary reporting in Arabic of meetings of the organization, in particular the Regional Committee; - Check proofs of WHO publications translated into Arabic. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education: Essential: University degree or equivalent education in translation/languages. Desirable: Masters degree in translation Skills: WHO Global Competencies Model at: who.int/employment/competencies/WHO_competencies_EN.pdf 1. Producing results. 2. Fostering integration and team work. 3. Respecting individual and cultural differences. 4. Communicating in a credible and effective way. Functional Skills and Knowledge: - Ability to use computer-assisted translation tools and relevant word processing tools. - Ability to work under pressure. -Team spirit, tact and discretion essential. Other Skills (e.g. IT): - Ability to use stand alone and network-based applications/tools of computer -assisted translation. Experience: Essential: At least two years experience in language services (translation/revision/editing) Languages: Mother tongue Arabic and excellent knowledge of English essential. Knowledge of French an asset. Additional Information: Post is open for local recruitment only, applicants must be nationals of the country of assignment.
