NATIONAL YOUTH COUNCIL OF NIGERIA NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL AN OFFICIAL PRESS STATEMENT PRESNTED BY COMR. ABDULLAHI ABDULMAJEED, PRESIDENT, NATIONAL YOUTH COUNCIL OF NIGERIA ON THE SUCCESSFUL CONGRESS OF THE NATIONAL YOUTH COUNCIL OF NIGERIA WHICH TOOK PLACE ON THE 21ST TO 24TH AUGUST, 2013 AT THE U.K BELLO ARTS THEATRE, MINNA, NIGER STATE. Gentle Men of the Press, Protocol: It is with joy, humility and gratitude to God that we the newly elected Executive Members of the National Youth Council of Nigeria wish to make this press statement in reflection and appreciation of the recent development in the National Youth Council of Nigeria, vis a vis the successful completion of the National Congress in Minna, Niger State which gave birth to a vibrant, focused and experience-filled new leadership of the National Youth Council of Nigeria under the leadership of Comr. Abdullahi Abdulmajeed. Like most of us are aware the National Youth Council has been faced with some challenges and conspiracy that has crippled the wheel of leadership and activities of the body, but despite all these; the fraud and manipulations by some stakeholders of the Youth Council that led to a defaulted Congress in Makurdi, Benue State, Nigerian Youths resolved and took their destinies in their own hands by electing their leaders at the 2013 National Youth Council Congress which took place at the U.K Bello, Art Theatre, Minna, Niger State from 21st to 24th August, 2013 through a keen democratic and electoral process which witnessed the participation of 32 State NYCN Chairmen and that of 55 Voluntary Youth Organizations (VYOs) with their delegates. The NYCN Board of Trustees, Local and International Observers, the Press and security agencies were physically present to give credibility to the exercise. The Congress was adjudged free and fare in all standard by all delegates, security officials and both local and international observers who attended the event. We most appreciate the role of the security agencies; especially the Nigeria Police Force, Niger State Command as led by the State Commissioner of Police, Mrs Diseye Nsirim. The entire Nigerian Youths can never thank President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan GCFR enough for upholding the trust and mandate that was given to him by the Nigerian Youths through the ballot box; the President has demonstrated clearheaded leadership by sacking the former Minister for Youth Development after finding out the truth that surrounded the National Youth Council of Nigeria crises. On this note we reiterate our commitment to true ideals of democracy which provides for fair hearing, participation and inclusion of all interest. It is also important we state emphatically that the newly elected National Executive Council of the NYCN as representatives of the Nigerian Youths are willing and ready to join hands with our amiable and transformation driven President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan in making sure that all his administration’s effort in developing and uniting Nigeria is sustained, while also giving our unalloyed support to his transformation agenda May we also use this medium to re-emphasize that the National Youth Council of Nigeria is not in any way factionalized as Nigerian Youths took their destiny in their hands by electing their leaders after the Ministry of Youth Development as led by the former Minister; Barr Inuwa Abdulkadir failed to demonstrate leadership in handling the affairs of the Council. The difference between Makurdi and Minna is that, the former Minister corruptly selected some Youths in Makurdi as elected leaders, while the Nigerian Youths elected their leaders in Minna. It is time the claim for the leadership of the Youth Council would be based on an evidential fact. This Council shall be saddled with the task of uniting all perceived factions within her folds as we believe some of us are aggrieved and therefore calling for an unwarranted “Unity Congress” which is born from a prejudiced and unpatriotic set of few members who think the Youth Council will remain dormant and a willing tool in the hands of undemocratic few. We wish to assure all and sundry that Nigerian youths now have their leaders duly elected and headed by Comr. Abdullahi Abdulmajeed as National President who has since been sworn in and swung into action. We promise to identify with the yearnings and aspirations of over 70million Nigerian Youths. We particularly wish to draw attention to the plight of Nigerian students as the ASUU strike endures by appealing to government and all critical stakeholders to fine tune means towards an amicable resolution so that our teaming population of young Nigerians may return to their various campuses. We are committed to identifying with all sections of the Nigerian youth population; the vast population of our Niger Delta youths who embraced federal government’s amnesty and have since been working to ensure that peace is maintained in the region, the NYCN will also collaborate with the Federal Government dialogue and reconciliation committee working on ending the strife and perennial violence that has become the order of the day in most parts of the North east geo-political zone. Finally, the issue of youth restiveness all over the country which is as a result of unemployment, empowerment, lack of appropriate mobilisation and inclusion will be assiduously looked into with a view to rescuing our youths the hope of our country from the brinks of degeneration and destruction. We wish to specially thank Ambassador Obi Adim, Special Adviser to the President on Youth Empowerment, Ms. Josephine Wushima, Special Adviser to the President on Job Creation and senior special assistant to the president on Youth and Students for their resolution in standing firm on the part of the truth after the post Makurdi Congress and their selfless and uncommon support towards the successful conduct of the Minna Congress. We also wish to thank the Government and the good people of Niger state under the leadership of the chief servant ,Governor Muazu Babangida for the successful hosting of the congress. We also commend the efforts of all the standing committees that resisted overtures from the former Minister for Youth Development and some established enemies of the Nigerian Youths and went ahead to organize the electoral process that restored hope and ushered in the new National Executive Council of the NYCN. We also commend the over 2000 accredited delegates that participated in the congress in Minna for their patience, restrains, doggedness and also by conducting themselves properly and ensured that Leaders with the right capacities were elected and not selected to pilot the affairs of the youths of our dear Nation despite all provocation from the Ministry and some enemies of the Nigerian Youth. We wish to request from Mr. President that any appointed Minister of Youth Development must not exceed the stipulated age (35 years) of a youth as adopted in the National Youth Policy even as the last quagmire in the National Youth Council of Nigeria as evidently shown that the former Minister was disconnected from the Youths and the president’s transformation agenda. The Council would soon be rolling out our Strategic Agenda for Youth Development and Empowerment (SAYDE) that will speed up the wheel of Youth development in Nigeria and we are anticipating that both the Public and Private sectors would participate in implementing the document in the interest of Nigerian youths. Once again, we are thanking individuals, Organizations and Government establishments that have contributed positively to restore sanity and justice in the National Youth Council of Nigeria and we are also appealing for your kind support as we embark on this assignment that will restore the value and dignity of the Nigerian Youth both at home and in the Diaspora.
