NATURAL SCIENCE QUESTION for the likes of Matthew Perkins Coppola, Sean Cordry, Joe Wood, John Hatmaker: I was out canoeing in a rain shower early this morning. (Lake all to self. Ahh!) Next to an island with tree limbs hanging out over the water, I noticed that rain drops straight from the sky just plinked and made rings on the water. However, at least some of the drops falling off the trees made bubbles on the surface. (Bubbles were ONLY under trees.) I’m figuring the drops from the trees took on some type of gas, likely oxygen. IF that is the case, are the bubbles formed because a) the leaves “breathe” oxygen into the water, b) as the droplets fall off, ridges/edges of the leaves/limbs aerate the water or c) something else?
