NATURE PRESERVE EAST OF SPARTA TO GROW . . . A wild part of Elgin has gotten wilder. The 208-acre Yarmouth Natural Heritage Area east of Sparta is gowing with addition of 45 acres of mostly forested land east of the preserve on Sparta Line. Kim Smale, Catfish Creek Conservation Authority general manager, says the acquisition is important because the area is home to several rare Carolinian species. “Theres species at risk habitat down through there for different plants and birds.” Yarmouth Natural Heritage Area is adjacent to privately-owned lands which make up the Catfish Creek Slope and Floodplain Forest, a designated provincial Area of Natural and Scientific Interest.
