NB: The Flight 173 crash that helped revolutionize airline safety - TopicsExpress

NB: The Flight 173 crash that helped revolutionize airline safety occurred in 1978 -- 36 years ago -- because of a mere 10 deaths. Weve had tens of thousands of easily avoidable (thru washing of hands) hospital deaths annually in the US (that there is a wide range of estimates reflects that hospital authorities arent even bothering to keep consistently reliable records). Its only in recent years that hospitals are getting serious about something as simple and basic as washing hands. Why the difference between the tow professions? In an article that appeared a decade or so ago in the NYTimes, David Brooks identified pressure from the airline pilots union (no effective version of which exists for hospital patients) as the key difference.
