NBA Faults FG: How Do You Replace Hundreds Of Lecturers?”- Asuu Strike The Federal Government has threaten to sack 6,000 professors if they do not return to classroom before the 4th of December, 2013. Although the Members of the Academic Staff Union of University, (ASUU) replied FG that the threat cannot hold water. It seems like ASUU are on the winning part as the Nigerian Bar Association asked FG how they planned to replace over 6000 sacked lecturers. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has faulted threat by the Federal Government to sack striking university lectures if the latter do not resume work on 4th December, 2013. NBA claimed that FG was resorting to failed military tacticsand also urged the lectures to reconsider their position in the interest of the students and the country. Also, a former Commander of the United Nations Multinational Peace Keeping Force in Angola, Gen. Chris Garuba, faulted the nation’s economic policies and suggested the abrogation of some extant obnoxious laws. According to the Chairman, NBA, Abuja, U.M Yaman, “this is not the first time we have heard threats from the government adds: And this is not going to be the last time we will hear threats from the government. # fact). Gen. Chris Garuba, said and I quote:“During the military era government severally threatened to sack lecturers if they don’t call off strike. He spoke in Abuja on Monday at the opening session of association’s Law Week. “But we need to be realistic, lecturers have a right to go on strike and government has the right to employ those who they want”. He also added that the university sector is the one that requires experiences specialists, “How do you replace the hundreds of professors of the universities? About five universities in this country have hundred professors. So how do you replace them? “It is a threat that does not hold water; it does not go to any issue.” The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) recommended to the Federal Government to look for an agreeable settlement with Academic staff union of universities. While addressing the strikers, the Chairman, Gen. Chris Garuba, stated, “Also, we want to appeal to ASUU that you cannot continue strike indefinitely; there must be an end to strike. “If somebody has made an offer and which the public is beginning to see that government has shown genuine interest to end the strike, I think ASUU ought to meet and reconsider their position in the interest of the Nigerian students and the nation.” We hope that the meeting which is slated to hold today will bring an END to the ASUU Strike.
