NC 55th Regiment Co. C Original Muster In Roll. This has a couple of Crotts in the list. Item #: GP1. First at Bethel, Farthest at Gettysburg and Chickamauga, Last at Appomattox. Original muster roll for Co. C of the NC 55th with signatures of all officers and soldiers including Thomas D. Falls who is documented as being one of the famous three for whom North Carolina claims Farthest at Gettysburg along with Captain E. Fletcher Satterfield of Co. H and Sergeant J.A. Whitley, Co. E of the 55th. The Gettysburg National Park Commission has substantiated this fact by marking the location where these soldiers went farther on July 3rd during Picketts Charge than any other Confederate. Jeffrey M. Girvan in his new book The 55th North Carolina in the Civil War states, The argument over which regiment and which state went the farthest at Gettysburg clouds the real story. What must be known, but unfortunately has been overlooked is the fact that the 55th North Carolina fought courageously during the three-day battle in Pennsylvania. After being bruised and battered on July 1, the regiment was still able to go the distance under heavy Federal fire on the final day of battle. The 55th was one of the first regiments to be engaged at Gettysburg and one of the last to leave the battlefield on July 3. .The date of the muster roll is May 31st, 1862. The guys were being mustered in at Camp Mangum by A.S. Calloway. The roll records their name, rank, where born, their age, occupation, height to within 1/4 inch, when, where and by whom they enrolled and remarks such as substitute and absent sick. The majority of the men were from Cleveland County, NC but some were also from Mecklenburg, Lincoln, Rutherford and Gaston Counties. Each person on the roll signed in the Oath column swearing the following: I do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the State of North Carolina and to the Constitutional powers and authorities which are, or may be established for the government thereof and maintain and defend the constitution of the said State and I do further swear that I will obey the orders of the Governor of the said State, and the orders of the officers that are, or may be set over me according to the rules and discipline of war. So help me God. The two sided roll has signatures and information of 97 officers and privates with Co. C. It is in fair condition with 95% of information easily readable. There are fold splits and dis-colorings that do not majorly effect content.
