NC Conservation Network Public Alert Hi Elizabeth, Duke Energy expects its 3.2 million North Carolina customers to pay the costs of closing its ash ponds, CEO Lynn Good said Friday.1 - Charlotte Observer This is absolutely unacceptable! North Carolina ratepayers should not be on the hook for cleaning up Duke Energy’s toxic coal ash ponds that dot our state. Governor Pat McCrory, Speaker Thom Tillis, and Senate President Phil Berger need to hear from concerned citizens like you. Tell them that Duke Energy shouldn’t raise rates in NC to clean up their long neglected toxic coal ash lagoons: action.ncconservationnetwork.org/CoalAshRatepayers The Charlotte Observer writes: Critics of Duke’s coal-ash storage practices say that customers should be spared and that instead the cost should be borne by Duke and its investors. “Duke has profited from doing the cheapest thing for decades, and it’s now time for them to pay the bill,” said D.J. Gerken, a lawyer for the Southern Environmental Law Center.”2 Asking North Carolina’s ratepayers to cover the costs of this clean-up is outrageous. Especially, after Duke Energy (the largest utility company in the nation) reported $2.7 billion in profits just last year. Send a message to our state leaders and tell them this is unacceptable: action.ncconservationnetwork.org/CoalAshRatepayers Thanks, Brittany Iery
