The two-day event held at the Randal Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas was selected as the best collegiate multi-sport or multi-discipline event in the nation by SportsTravel Magazine after being nominated for the honor by Marlo Priest of the Fayetteville Visitors Bureau. More than 6,900 fans attended the 2013 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center. The 2013 meet marked the 12th time the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships were held on the University of Arkansas campus, with all coming since the Randal Tyson Track Center was opened in 2000. The Razorback men’s track and field team captured its 41st NCAA track and field title while the women’s track and field team placed fourth nationally at the event. “We are pleased that SportsTravel magazine has recognized the University of Arkansas and Fayetteville as one of the nation’s top destinations for intercollegiate athletics competition,” Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Jeff Long said. “As the home to more than 200 athletic events each year, the University of Arkansas has developed a national reputation for hosting successful and well attended events including numerous championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center. It is a team effort and this award serves as recognition of our athletic department staff, coaches, volunteers, community leaders and Razorback fans who work together to make these events a success both operationally and in providing a significant economic boost to Northwest Arkansas and the region.” Since entering the Southeastern Conference in 1992, the University of Arkansas has hosted 77 SEC, regional and national competitions. In the past five years alone, in addition to the more than 200 regular season events already on campus, the University of Arkansas has hosted 26 championship events including the program’s first ever NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship, SEC Women’s Golf Championship, NCAA Men’s Golf Regional and SEC Softball Championship. A recent study estimated that athletic events at the University of Arkansas have an estimated impact of $153.6 million annually on the region. In the next five years, the report forecasted the total economic impact of Razorback Athletics will reach $1 Billion. The SportsTravel Awards program bestows honors at the amateur, collegiate and professional levels in three categories each. Criteria for nomination and voting include: superior organization of and attendance at the event, a superior experience for competitors and/or spectators and how the event’s host city or venue served to enhance the event. “We are pleased to recognize a number of outstanding sporting events again this year,” Timothy Schneider, publisher of SportsTravel magazine said. “Each of the winners is a prime example of achieving excellence in organization and management for both competitors and spectators.” For more information on Arkansas track and field, follow @RazorbackTF on Twitter.
