NCKC and Kite Jam - DOWNWINDER IS ON! Details: - Sunday 8am. Park opens at 8am, we want to be rigged and launched by 830-845am. - Start Sand Key Park (SKP) - End Indian Rocks Beach (IRB) at 4th Ave (across from Crabby Bills) - Return trip on Beach Trolley - psta.net/beachtrolley.php What you need: - Sand Key parking is $4 per car, $8 if more than one person - Trolley is $2 each time you board. You need exact change and dry cash. I use a waterproof container with a string around my neck under my wetsuit. It’s big enough to hold cash, credit cards, and key. They have them at WSW or Sports Authority for $10. Plastic ziplock bags usually don’t work. - Shirt and shoes on the Trolley. The booties and tee-shirt/wetsuit you wear are fine - Cash for a well-earned beer and food at Crabby Bills. They open at 11am (7am for breakfast) and $1.50 happy hour drafts at 11am everyday - Who knew? Start Time: I personally talked to and confirmed core group of four plus myself for the 8am start time, and three more are 75-80% (fear of committal, that’s cool). These guys will show up on time so if you want to ride with the group respect the start time. Skill level: You should be comfortable in the Gulf, deep water, and some waves/chop. You must know how to self-rescue and secure your gear on your own, including deep water. The group will help you but you’re expected to be an independent rider. Other Details: Wind direction is forecasted for N/NNW. Review forecast and rig appropriately. If you want to go past IRB it’s not recommended unless you’re very comfortable riding far off-shore. The confirmed group will NOT keep going. It’s a 5.5 mile ride which is fairly short. We’ll take our time so plan on two hours. The way I see it the person who finishes a DW first is the loser. I’ll probably bring a camelback but at this distance it’s not needed. Any issues and the trip is one big out, stay with the group and we’ll wait until you are on the beach, and you can trolley back to car or Crabby Bills. Trolley does not stop in Belleair Beach or Belleair Shores so if you have to exit in this area you’ll have to walk a little N or S to find first stop. Respect beach goers, they have right of way in water, if they are in water stay far away. It will be early and most of beach is semi-private so shouldn’t be an issue but be respectful.
