NEAR THE END OF OCTOBER, 2014, the 3rd US COLORED CAVALRY, - TopicsExpress

NEAR THE END OF OCTOBER, 2014, the 3rd US COLORED CAVALRY, organized in and recruited from Vicksburg in the late fall of 1863, came home to Vicksburg again in the persons of these re-enactors from Florida who portrayed this first African American regiment to serve the US military in support of their own freedom. And the second picture, taken eight decades later, is called Negro boys on Easter morning on the south side, Chicago, April 1941 by Russell Lee, from the files of the Farm Security Administration, Library of Congress. These two photographs embody both the physical and psychological transitions of Black people from slavery to freedom. We were incredibly self-defined because we were changing our circumstances and thereby changing our locations. This was a seismic change in both our and Americas history.
