NEARLY DEPARTED - Wow, these false reports of celebrity deaths spread like wildfire. Todays not really dead celebrity is McCauley Culkin. Although, Im sure many were just as surprised to find out that he was still alive in the first place. He has kept a very low profile, and really hasnt been a celebrity for a while. Ah, the dangers of too much fame too soon. But McCauley Culkin isnt alone. There have been plenty of other false reports of celebrity deaths in recent memory. Betty White, Jon Bon Jovi, Hugh Hefner, Jeff Goldblum, Morgan Freeman and Russell Crowe have all seen their deaths erroneously reported on the internet. And I understand why people post or share these stories, everyone wants to be a part of the breaking news. To be the first to report it. Its hard to resist. But maybe just do a little background check first. Does the story come from a credible source? It doesnt take very long to find out. It will save someone the embarrassment of having to retract their touching tribute to how McCauley Culkin had touched their lives and gave them the courage to stay home alone. And if, for some reason you just feel compelled to report on a death, to avoid making a mistake, just report on someone youre SURE is dead. You know, like Amelia Earhart, Abe Lincoln or Marylin Monroe. It will satisfy that need to report a death, and you can be sure it wont have to be retracted. And in a related shocking story, did you hear about Abe Vigoda? Yep, hes still alive. Now THAT is hard to believe.
