NEC, IFES Host Workshop For Media Practitioners By Ballah Kollie, LINA Bong County Correspondent GBARNGA, December 19 (LINA) – The National Elections Commission (NEC) and the Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) Thursdayconducted a one-day regional workshop for media practitioners in Gbarnga, Bong County. In her opening statement at the workshop held in the Gbarnga administrative hall, NEC Commissioner Davidetta Brown Lasanah emphasized the critical role the media play in elections and called on them to be ethical and professional in their reportage of Saturday’s Special Senatorial Election. Mentoring reporters on the role of the media and the press Union of Liberia (PUL) Code of Conduct for the Special Senatorial Election, PUL Grievance and Ethics Committee Chairman Frank B. Sainworla Jr., stressed the need for the media to create a level playing field for all candidates and to refrain from fueling conflict through hate messages and incitement. Sainworla reminded participants about the fragile nature of elections and the critical role the media play and how the situation could degenerate into chaos if media practitioners are not ethical and professional in their reportage. Speaking on campaign platforms and candidates’ adherence to the code of conduct of the Special Senatorial Election, IFES Program Manager Senesee G. Freeman called on the media to highlight the platforms of all candidates to help citizens understand what their promises are and hold them accountable for them. The Regional Media Workshop on polling and counting procedures and the Special Senatorial Election brought together participants from Margibi, Bong, Nimba, Grand Gedeh, Maryland, Sinoe, River Gee and Grand Kru Counties. Meanwhile, NEC and IFES on Wednesday, December 17 concluded a two-day Regional Civic Voters Education and Gender Consultation on the Special Senatorial Election in Gbarnga, Bong County. LINA
