NEKO CASE- THE WORST THINGS GET… At this point who doesnt love Neko Case? Though still largely unknown by the mainstream she is probably as close to a non-polarizing artist in the indie world as you can get. The Worse Things Get… is her seventh solo album and like her last fews mix of rockers and ballads with consistently solid cuts surrounding a few absolute standouts. It is her most autobiographical album and reportedly recorded after a dark period in her life where she sank into a depression following the deaths of her beloved grandmother and both of her parents. Cases subjects are bold female protagonists who take no mess. Her voice is jaw-droopingly gorgeous though she often sounds ballsy and gritty- when she drops a curse word it comes off tough not cute. As she ages, Case is doubling down rather than mellowing out. She is a fighter and exudes authenticity. Standout cuts include Night Still Comes, City Swans, the closer Ragtime and especially the blistering Man, one of the best of her career.
