NEUROSCIENCE RESEARCH SUPPORTS MUSIC AND SPEECH Representatives from the American Music Therapy Association and the Certification Board for Music Therapists recently met with Dr. Nina Kraus in her laboratory at Northwestern University to discuss neuroscience research as it relates to music therapy practice, policy, and research. Dr. Kraus and her lab, the Auditory Neuroscience Lab (ANL), were recently featured by NPR in a story about their research exploring the impact of community music programs on neural auditory processing. ANL partnered with the Harmony Project in Los Angeles—a nonprofit afterschool community music program that teaches music to children in low-income communities—to explore what effect, if any, their music training program had on the children’s speech processing abilities. The researchers reported that children participating in the Harmony Project showed stronger neural processing of auditory cues linked to reading and language (i.e., learning music appeared to improve the brain’s ability to process speech), especially after a full year of music training.
